Most people opt to have a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty to help with sagging and excess skin after pregnancy or excessive weight loss. The excess skin from these occurrences can have a negative impact on both the emotional and physical health of an individual, leading to people taking more permanent measures of a tummy tuck.
The procedure firms up the tummy region, tightens up the muscles and can also reduce stretch marks that occur below the belly button. You generally have the option of a full tummy tuck which removes excess skin and tightens the muscles across the whole abdomen or a mini tummy tuck which tightens only the muscles in your lower abdomen.
Often a tummy tuck is performed in conjunction with other procedures like liposuction or breast reduction, enhancement of the thighs and bottom lifts. These procedures in conjunction with each other can result in a more slender and toned appearance leading to a spike in confidence and even potentially one’s happiness.
While the procedure tightens up muscles and skin, without liposuction, it accounts for only a very slight loss in weight directly from the procedure.
Or so we thought.
A new study published in the February issue of the medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery shows that a tummy tuck may in fact result in significant weight loss especially for people who were overweight at the time of surgery.
The study found that 70% of the women who lost an average 2kg as a direct result of the surgery managed to sustain a loss greater than that in the year that followed. Furthermore, patients with a preoperative BMI greater than or equal to 24.5 maintained long-term weight loss at one year. They then decreased in weight by an average of 4.5 percent of their original BMI one year later. Sustained weight loss was also more likely for women with a greater amount of excess abdominal tissue removed at abdominoplasty.
Interestingly, increased satiety seemed to be an important contributor to long-term weight loss. Three-fourths of women reported an increased feeling of satisfaction, either after eating or throughout the day, after undergoing abdominoplasty. This may be a contributing factor to the ongoing weight loss following the procedure. In conjunction with this, there have been many studies conducted that reinforce the sentiment that increasing personal happiness leads to easier and more sustainable weight loss.
While everyone’s results are different when it comes to plastic surgery, there is a chance that following a tummy tuck procedure one will notice ongoing weight loss. The likelihood of this can be increased by a balanced diet and regular exercise, which is also beneficial to your health.
